Wesley LePatner, Chief Executive Officer of Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust (BREIT) and a longtime senior leader at Blackstone, was among the victims of a tragic shooting that took place Monday at the firm’s Park Avenue headquarters.
Blackstone confirmed her passing in an official statement released Tuesday.
“Words cannot express the devastation we feel that our beloved colleague, Wesley LePatner, was among those who lost their lives in the tragic incident yesterday at 345 Park Avenue,” the firm said. “We are also deeply saddened by the loss of the other innocent victims, including brave security personnel and NYPD.”
LePatner, who formally became CEO of BREIT in January 2025, had been with Blackstone since 2014. Widely admired for her intellect, warmth, and leadership, she played a transformative role in the development of Blackstone’s Core+ real estate strategy and was integral to the launch and operational success of BREIT.
“Wesley was brilliant, passionate, warm, generous, and deeply respected within our firm and beyond,” Blackstone’s statement added. “She embodied the best of Blackstone. Our prayers are with her husband, children, parents, and family.”
LePatner succeeded Frank Cohen as BREIT CEO following his retirement at the end of 2024. Her appointment marked the continuation of a carefully planned leadership transition within Blackstone Real Estate. Prior to her CEO role, LePatner served as Chief Operating Officer of BREIT and held board membership roles, helping shape its strategic direction and growth. Under her stewardship, BREIT maintained a portfolio heavily concentrated in high-growth sectors such as data centers, logistics, and rental housing—sectors benefiting from long-term structural trends.
The shooting occurred during working hours at 345 Park Avenue in Manhattan, resulting in multiple casualties, including LePatner, private security officers, and an NYPD officer.
Following the incident, Blackstone closed its New York office and offered support resources to employees. Blackstone CEO Stephen A. Schwarzman and President Jon Gray described the tragedy as “the worst day in the firm’s 40-year history” in a message to staff.
The news has deeply shaken the real estate and investment communities, with tributes pouring in for LePatner’s leadership and legacy. Known for her strategic vision and tireless dedication, she leaves behind a lasting mark on the real estate industry.
